The Saudi Human rights lawyer Waleed Abu al-Khair, who received the 2012 Olof Palme Prize, is now being detained in Saudi Arabia. Read the appeal for his release by Pierre Schori, chairman of the Olof Palme Memorial Fund.

It is with great concern that we have received the information regarding the detention of lawyer Waleed Sami Abu al-Khair, and his trial at the special criminal court, which was set up in 2008 to combat terrorism in Saudi Arabia.

We know Waleed Sami Abu al-Khair as a serious human rights defender for peaceful reforms in the country he loves. We are confident that he is acting in accordance with universally recognized principles. We join many other voices in the world to appeal to the Saudi authorities for his release from al-Ha’ir prison in Riyadh.

Our thoughts are also with his wife, Samar Badawi, who carries their child.
